Dentures
Complete dentures are used to replace missing teeth, but it can also be used for people who have lost several teeth. In this case a so-called partial denture or overdenture is required.
Dentures are removable replacements for your teeth, designed to look as natural as your own teeth and gum issues.
State-of-the-art dentures may look very realistic and feel comfortable that nobody can tell you are wearing.
Your dentures will be customized to fit your mouth, and accordingly coloured to look as natural as possible. They will look alike your original teeth, so your appearance will be unchanged.
How to get used to dentures
It may feel strange at first to wear a denture. Your mouth will change and your denture may need to be adjusted that’s why your dentist may want to see you frequently to make sure your denture fit. Eating and speaking may feel different with dentures, so be careful as your denture may make it harder for you to feel hot foods and liquids and it is advisable to start with soft food, chew slowly and use both sides of your mouth to keep the denture in place. At first food may taste a wee bit different, but after a while when you have got used to wearing your denture, it will begin to taste normal again.
After having new dentures fitted, it is normal to produce more saliva than usual for a few hours, and for your mouth to feel a bit irritated for a few days.
During the first days and weeks, your tongue and cheek muscles will need to adapt to the new dentures which results in pronouncing some words with difficulty. Reading out loud and practising tricky words can help.
It is said that it can take one week for every decade old you are to get used to new dentures.
Will anybody be able to tell them from my natural teeth?
Dentures made with today’s technology can look so natural that people can’t tell you are wearing them. Your dentures will be custom-made to fit your mouth, and coloured to look as natural as possible. They will take on the character of your original teeth, so your appearance will be unchanged.
Cleaning your denture
It is a simple, but rather important procedure. Resin which dentures are made from can absorb bits of food and bacteria easily, therefore they should be cleaned twice a day, and rinsed after eating.
As dentures are fragile, please make sure you do the cleaning with high care to avoid damage. Carefully brush your denture with a soft denture brush and a special toothpaste.
Your gums need time to be without your denture, so do not wear them at night. As they need to be kept moist, put them in clean water or a denture-soaking solution. Never soak them in bleach or boiling water.
Dentures to be replaced
Worn, ill-fitting dentures can cause irritation and discomfort and surely there are signs of the necessity of replacing them such as clicking, slipping, frequent gum irritation and odour. You would still need to see a dentist for regular check-ups, so that any infections and other conditions can be detected at an early stage.
The alternatives for dentures
Alternative treatment for patients who have lost all their teeth is implantation and overdenture, which is to fit onto the implants directly or onto a metal bar between implants. For patients who still have natural teeth remaining, other forms of treatment might include implants or bridges or both.
