Bone-grafting and sinus augmentation
Bone-augmentation is a term which is used to describe different procedures in order to „build” bone so that the surgeon could place dental implants. A surgeon makes a cut over the bone defect. The bone graft is shaped and inserted into and around the area. The bone graft is held in place with pins, plates, or screws. Stitches are used to close the wound. A splint or cast is usually used to prevent injury or movement while healing, which takes several months.
Recovery time depends on the injury or defect and the size of the bone graft and it will take up to 3 months or even longer to heal.
Sinus augmentation:
it is a surgery which adds bone to the upper jaw in the regio of molars and pre-molars to make it taller. Sinus lift is performed by an oral or maxillofacial surgeon for patients who have lost teeth in the upper jaw due to periodontal diseases and do not have enough bone for implants to be placed. The bone operated can come from your own body, from a cadaver or may be synthetic.
Sinus augmentations have become common over the past 15 years as more people are getting dental implants to replace missing teeth.
